Ilaiyaraaja is an Indian film composer, singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist. Born in 1943 in the Erode district in the state of Tamil Nadu, he grew up in a musical family. His father, Ganavelrajan, was a percussionist, and his mother, Parvathiamma, was a vocalist, which instilled in him a deep appreciation for music from a young age.
Ilaiyaraaja's entry into the music world began when he started playing the violin at the age of six. He joined the Madras School of Music at the age of nine, under the tutelage of the renowned musician, V. Subramania Pillai. He began his professional career as a violinist, accompanying various vocalists and instrumentalists in local concerts.
The first film score he worked on was Thee, a 1967 Tamil film composed by L. Vaidyanathan. However, it was his work on 16 Vayathinile in 1977 that catapulted him to fame, earning him his first Filmfare Award. This was followed by numerous critically acclaimed scores, cementing his position as a leading music composer in the Indian film industry.
Ilaiyaraaja's music is characterized by its eclectic blend of traditional Carnatic and Tamil folk music with modern elements, a unique blend that has captivated audiences worldwide. His extensive musical repertoire includes compositions in various genres, such as the romantic melodies in Thalapathi, the energetic beats in Utsav, and the soulful ballads in Nandhalala.
Throughout his illustrious career spanning over four decades, Ilaiyaraaja has been recognized with numerous awards, including three National Film Awards and 31 Filmfare Awards. He has also been honored with the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honor, for his contributions to music.
