Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is one of the most celebrated poets, playwrights, and intellectuals in German literature, with a career spanning over six decades. Born on August 28, 1749, in Frankfurt, Germany, Goethe was the second son of a wealthy family, and his privileged upbringing allowed him to develop a love for literature and the arts at an early age.

Goethe's early literary endeavors focused on poetry, with his first collection of ballads, Lieder und Balladen, published in 1773. However, it was his dramatic works that would eventually bring him international recognition, particularly his famous play Faust, published in two parts between 1808 and 1832. Goethe's magnum opus explores themes of love, morality, and the human condition, solidifying his position as a towering figure in German literature.

During his later years, Goethe continued to write poetry and prose, including his Italian Journey (1817-1830), a travelogue that showcases his observations on art, nature, and culture. Goethe's contributions to literature, theater, and philosophy have had a profound impact on Western culture, influencing countless artists, thinkers, and writers.
