Leontyne Price was born on February 10, 1927, in Laurel, Mississippi. She rose to international fame as a soprano, particularly in the United States. Price's music education began at Fisk University in 1945 where she studied classical music. During her time at Fisk, she made her opera debut in 1952, as Barta in Der Vampyr, a production of the Baltimore Opera. This marked the beginning of an extraordinary career that spanned over four decades. She continued her studies at the New York City Opera Company, where she honed her skills as a vocalist. Price's voice was characterized by its beauty and power, making her a leading soprano in classical music.
Her breakthrough role was as Elisabeth in Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser in 1961.
