Astor Piazzolla
Argentine composer who pioneered <em>tango nuevo</em> style
Astor Piazzolla, an Argentine composer and bandoneon player, was born on March 11, 1921, in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
His early life in Italy, where his family moved when he was two years old, exposed him to classical music and introduced him to various instruments.
Returning to Argentina, Piazzolla began to focus on the bandoneon, an instrument characteristic of tango music, and developed a unique playing style.
He started his career in the 1940s with various tango orchestras and eventually formed his own quintet, Trío Virtuoso, in 1955.
Piazzolla's creative fusion of traditional tango with elements of jazz, classical, and folk music led to the development of tango nuevo style.
Some of his most famous compositions include Libertango and Adiós Nonino.
Throughout his life, Piazzolla was awarded numerous honors and accolades, including a Grammy Award and several Latin Grammy Awards.
He continues to inspire and influence contemporary musicians across the globe.
