Innovative French composer & organist, renowned for his complex harpsichord pieces & blend of French & Italian styles.

Franois Couperin, a Baroque composer and organist, left an indelible mark on the musical landscape of 17th-century France. Born in Paris in 1668, Couperin was the youngest son of Charles Couperin, a renowned musician in his own right. As a child prodigy, Franois began his musical training under his father's guidance. His early influences spanned the works of Monteverdi, Carissimi, and Cavalieri, which would shape his unique compositional style.

The early 1680s witnessed Couperin's rise as a prominent organist within the Notre-Dame Cathedral. During this period, he composed the Ordres for Harpsichord, a collection of 24 works showcasing his mastery of the instrument.

Couperin's harpsichord pieces are characterized by their complexity, lyricism, and use of ornamentation. His compositions reflect a blend of French and Italian influences, which was characteristic of the Baroque period. Some of his most beloved pieces include Première Courante, Sarabande la Majestueuse, and Gavotte.

Throughout his career, Couperin remained committed to his craft, constantly refining his compositional skills. His legacy extends far beyond his own compositions, as he laid the groundwork for future generations of French harpsichordists. In 1700, Couperin became the organist of the Palais-Royal, further solidifying his position as a prominent figure in the French musical scene.
