Merle Haggard is a celebrated American country music artist, born on April 6, 1937, in Shields, Oklahoma, to a family of humble means. His childhood was marked by hardship, and at the age of 14, he was sent to the Preston School of Industry, a juvenile correctional facility in Ione, California, for burglary and stealing a rifle. During his time at the school, Merle began to learn music by listening to the radio, particularly Hank Williams, Sr. and the Carter Family.
